I'm going to remind you of one more Pigeon book, which is Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late. It's simply great, with the fiesty pigeon at his (her?) best trying to get the reader to let him stay up late.
I hear there's a good show about birds on TV tonight.
... Should be very educational.

... C'mon! What's five minutes in the grand scheme of things!?

Considerations:::
Good humor for all ages. Pigeon is currently my favorite book character.
The Accelerated Reading level for Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late is 1.1; which means the average 1st Grader in the 1st month of school should be able to read it and not be stymied by the vocabulary. It can be read to any age, of course.
