Chicken cheeks...Turkey tushie...
Duck-billed platypus gluteus maximus!
[All the kind of talk that young kids adore.]
Chicken Cheeks is a goofy pleasure and the type of book whose principal merit is that it is a quick read that provides some chuckles.
The artwork by Kevin Hawkes is great. You might know him from "The Librarian Who Measured the Earth", "Weslandia", and "Velma Gratch". He is equally good in Chicken Cheeks, and he and Mr. Black sure had my kids chuckling.
Considerations:::
Five Star art. Three Star concept. This is an entertaining book, but to be truthful it doesn't have what I think of as 'longevity'. That is, its not a book to read over and over for years to come, so I suggest you check it out at the library before considering it as a purchase.
The Accelerated Reading designation for Chicken Cheeks is a generic "1" which means it hasn't been fully assessed (the exact month remains unknown). And I don't generally say this, but I don't think in this case that it matters what month the vocabulary is at. There isn't a lot of text and with a little help most children are going to be able to memorize the words and/or figure them out from the pictures.
