EASY READERS from 1 to 1.9

bookcover of Why We Have Thanksgiving
Why We Have Thanksgiving
by Margaret Hillert

I love this little book. If you provide some background information, this pre-primer can do a marvelous job of teaching not only why the pilgrims left Europe but also why the Pilgrims were so thankful after that first horrific year, and why they wanted to celebrate.

That is what we can do.
We can go in a boat.

bookcover of Thanksgiving Mice!
Thanksgiving Mice!
by Bethany Roberts

"Preschool and early elementary grade teachers looking for a short, light introduction to the holiday may want to give this colorful picture book a try." Booklist, ALA

The characters are charming and the colors are vibrant. School Library Journal

Okay, I'm a sucker for mice. One of my favorite poems as a child was Robert Louis Stevenson's I like Mice and my pro-mice stance hasn't changed much since then. Thus I like this little book that retells the Pilgrims early American experience in the context of school play.

Small signs in the drawings remind children that about the Mayflower was the name of the ship, and that Plymouth Rock was where the Pilgrims landed.

Nothing outstanding here, but this is a solid little practice reader that I think youngsters will enjoy.

bookcover of One Little Two Little Three Little Pilgrims
One Little Two Little Three Little Pilgrims

by B.G. Hennessy

This is an okay book where the text isn't very inspiring, but the pictures have something to teach. In fact there is a note from the author at the very end which declares that this book isn't really about Thanksgiving, but is "meant to give a general picture of Pilgrim and Wampanoag life." (Thats Wam-pa-NO-ag.) So it's a book to use as a confirmation of lessons already learned.

Note: Book construction seemed inferior to me. The book I got from the library was falling apart and it didn't look old.

bookcover of Firefighters Thanksgiving
Firefighters' Thanksgiving
by Maribeth Boelts
Thanksgiving Day –this shift's begun.
Ten firefighters at Station 1.

Lou says, "I can cook today."
A list is made. They're on their way.
I wasn't expecting it, but I really liked this book and think it's going to have a lot of appeal to boys and girls that are intrigued by firefighters.

The story is that the guys at Station 1 are getting ready for Thanksgiving when calls begin to come in. They guys (and there are indeed no women) fight fires, clean up, and try to keep cooking until at last a big fire needs to be fought. They put that out but Lou, the chief cook, is hurt and everyone is concerned.

Back at the station, night is falling.
Families will soon be calling.
The turkey's raw, the potatoes, too.
No pies, no bread, just thoughts of Lou.
They was the trucks and hose the floor.

A call comes in–it's 8:04.

excerpt from Firefighters' Thanksgiving
Bit of a spoiler here, but everything gets wrapped up very well, as at the end good citizens (possibly the ones who's fires were put out) arrive with delicious Thanksgiving goodies. The last picture, in fact, shows several of the guys in Lou's hospital room with plates.
